The University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute, as part of a U.S. Department of Transportation research project is studying wireless vehicle networks that could make driving safer through vehicle to vehicle communication. This research involves nearly 3000 vehicles in the Ann Arbor area. The research parallels research being done in Europe by the Car 2 Car Communication Consortium. Vehicle to vehicle communications provides the potential of warning drivers of approaching emergency vehicles, vehicles approaching from a blind intersection and a multitude of other possibilities.
