Lateral Minimum Requirements: Equivalent to completion of the 12th grade, current LE dispatcher for 2-years, Basic Dispatch POST Certificate
Bonus: $15,000 for Full-Time Lateral / $3,000 for Per-Diem
Base Salary: $85,543-$112,284
Retirement: CalPERS retirement 2% @ 55 with 3-year average final comp for “Classic” members and 2% @ 62 with 3-year average final comp for “New” members. Participation in the Social Security Program.
Insurance: A choice of medical plans with City paid single coverage of 100% of the lowest cost HMO (Kaiser) single coverage or City paid two party or family coverage up to 90% of the least costly HMO (Kaiser) or $160 per month if waived. City Paid dental, vision, and life insurance premiums
Vacation: 88 – 200 hours annual vacation, depending on length of service
Leaves: 96 sick hours per year earned; extended sick leave and family sick leave
Holidays: 13 holidays per year (includes 3 floating holidays)
Shift Differential: 5%
Bilingual Differential: $3,599.96/year (if applicable)
Uniform Allowance: $208/year
Programs: Credit Union, Employee Assistance, $500 per month City contribution to a PORAC Trust account, and Free Fitness classes through City of San Mateo Parks and Recreation programs

This is a full-time DISPATCHER II LATERAL OPPORTUNITY for those EXPERIENCED in PUBLIC SAFETY DISPATCH (911). ONLY those with PUBLIC SAFETY DISPATCH experience need apply. This is a continuous recruitment and applicants are added to the employment list as they meet the hiring criteria.
As an incentive, those hired meeting the criteria for Dispatcher II Lateral Exclusive Hiring Bonus, could be eligible for:
1. A $15,000 hiring bonus over a 3-year timeline upon 1) completion of training, 2) completion of probation, and 3) 36 months of employment with the City of San Mateo Police Department; and
2. 40 hours of vacation time upon completion of training with proof of leave balances from prior agency
A Lateral Dispatcher II candidate must:
Be an active law enforcement dispatcher;
Possess a Basic Dispatch Certificate from the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST). A copy of your certificate with your application is required in order for you to continue with the process;
Have at least two years of full-time experience as a California law enforcement dispatcher; and
Attach a résumé to your application packet.
Note: Currently Dispatchers work four (4) consecutive twelve (12) hour shifts, followed by four (4) days off, followed by three (3) consecutive twelve (12) hour shifts and followed by three (3) days off. Employees work 12 hours per day and shift work is required. Work schedules will vary, and overtime maybe required.
6:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. – Days
2:00 p.m. – 2:00 a.m. – Swing
6:00 p.m. – 6:00 a.m. – Graveyard
Ideal Candidate
The Dispatchers work in a team environment 24 hours a day, seven days a week under the general direction of Senior Dispatchers. The Dispatcher II is the journey level class within the Dispatcher series and requires a strong work ethic, strong customer service skills and strong interpersonal skills. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the department.
THE DUTIES:
Dispatchers receive incoming calls for police and fire for a number of local jurisdictions and dispatch necessary units using a computer aided dispatch system, processing and prioritizing incoming calls for emergency assistance. Dispatchers perform a variety of general support duties related to communications activities. Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Perform a variety of general support duties related to communication activities.
• Operate Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) equipment and to enter, update, and retrieve information from teletype networks relating to wanted persons, stolen property, vehicle registration and other information.
• Determine the nature, location, and priority of an emergency; coordinate the response of police, fire, ambulance or other emergency units through CAD data terminals in accordance with established procedures.
Knowledge of:
• English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation
• Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) equipment
• Modern office procedures, methods and computer equipment.
• Public safety classification codes and computer commands
Ability to:
• Understand and follow written and oral instructions,
• Speak clearly and precisely
• Work well under pressure,
• Exercise good judgment and make sound decisions in emergency situations
• Assist in training new employees
• Type at a speed necessary for adequate job performance
