President’s Message (August 2013)

I want to publicly thank the chapter members and officers who helped make the APCO Convention an overwhelmingly successful event. This year the conference in Anaheim was attended by over 5,000 people; the exhibit hall was enthusiastically attended, well represented by our commercial partners, and proved to be a very productive week. The buzz regarding the many products entering the market for “soft radio” apps and interoperability solutions including Harris’ BeOn platform, Motorola’s VALR suite, Raytheon’s WAVE technology, and AT&T’s EPTT service all worked as advertised and generated huge interest.

The plenary sessions were broad in topic, competitive in content, and useful to those of us who attended. One must make tough decisions in choosing which session to attend and which to forgo due to the exhaustive offering. The APCO keynotes were incredibly interesting and inspirational. The block party was fun and afforded more face time with our peers and vendors. The business meetings were well organized, efficient and informative as well.

Most of all I want to give a shout out to our friends and peers from CPRA, who were the most gracious and friendly “hosts” to all of us from NAPCO. Thank you Mr. Tim Trager, CPRA President! We were able to leverage the time spent at the APCO conference to set goals for our respective chapters going forward and to establish areas of shared interest that we each hope to be able to leverage. I look forward to the chapter meeting in Santa Cruz, where we will catch up with chapter business and will hear a presentation from Santa Cruz’s comm center manager.

Remember to save the date of December 12 for our annual Tabletop and awards banquet. I promise you that we will have very interesting speakers, honorees and exhibits.
